Accessory Report – 5 Collections to Set the Tone
It’s no secret that accessories finish a space, just like they finish an outfit. For the home, accessories may mean books, mirrors, art, soft items, interesting lights, objects – the list is endless. Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is more. Usually when I work with clients we start with their personal or existing items then add, subtract, and arrange.
Then there are spaces that are entirely blank slates. No personal items, no family treasures. Wow, this can be daunting and yet super exciting. What better way to bring a vision to life!
A great place to start is with the display of a collection. It’s easy and it can be elegant or funky, precious or relaxed. Use a collection as an anchor to other accessories and a link or contrast to the architecture and furnishings.
A word of warning: Be selective and look for variety and layers. Don’t repeat to excess. Even if farm-life is your vision, a room full of chicken statues and nothing else could be a bit wacky.
Useful tip: Try grouping collections rather than scattering items about like Easter eggs. Presenting in multiples highlights what’s special about a collection.
There are numerous great examples of collection displays for inspiration. For a current project, I’m reviewing ideas that add personality to the room with an interesting shape, texture or color without adding clutter. I’ve narrowed our ideas down to these top 5.
Enjoy!

Vintage Swedish snow shovels
An interesting way to display a textile collection. I have a few pieces of indigo and other fabrics that will work well!
